Our event is a one-of-a-kind sensual literary weekend celebration of two uniquely different, open-themed BOOKLOVER'S BURLESQUE shows that highlight a mix of ANY & ALL GENRES of the written word matched with burlesque, boylesque, and draglesque artists chosen from around the country and the world!

Each night on April 14th and 15th, we will feature different world-renowned "Guest of Honor" performing artists and authors, professional actors/readers, and specially-curated burlesque, boylesque, and draglesque acts chosen for our festival. And just as a library is an eclectic mix of books, our festival shall also celebrate an eclectic mix of all types of writing matched with all types of performers. Our shows are sex/body/queer positive, feminist, and inclusive to all!

Come join us for one or BOTH nights of our special inaugural festival happening on  April 14th and 15th at The Alberta Rose Theatre!

Our History:

BOOKLOVER'S BURLESQUE, produced by Lacy Knightly/ Nick Lacy of Lacy Productions, is the world's sexiest literary salon which matches titillating, inspiring, and/or empowering book readings with burlesque, boylesque, or draglesque performances. Professional readers, actors, or authors read aloud a piece of writing from any genre and are then followed by a burlesque, boylesque, or draglesque performance inspired by the piece in aesthetic, feel, emotion, character, plot, etc.

Since early 2016, we have produced quarterly shows highlighting genres such as gothic literature, science fiction, erotica, fantasy, fairy tales, mysteries, classic literature, and more. We strive to raise up both the literary and the performing arts, empower others as well as entertain through the written word and a bit of tease, support and promote books, literacy, and burlesque, and be open, diverse, and inclusive to all in a safe, welcoming environment.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

For over 44 years, this unique, genre-crossing vocal/guitar duo has cast its passionate musical spell worldwide, capturing the hearts of lovers, the respect of jazz buffs and the jaw-dropping awe of guitarists and singers.  Their recording career took off with 1988's groundbreaking Tears of Joy.  Now, 13 albums later, they have toured the world incessantly as a duo, appearing at times alongside Miles Davis, Count Basie, George Benson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and many others.  They have long been regarded by musicians and critics as the standard for an improvising musical duo.  Their music spans Duke Ellington, the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix--rock, pop, jazz, gospel, blues, folk, world and classical--classics and originals, but inevitably finally just sounds like Tuck & Patti.  Transcending categorization, Tuck & Patti are known for individual virtuosity in service of the greater goal of expressing love, hope and gratitude through their musical collaboration.

To understand Tuck & Patti, start with the wellspring of love within them, then their music begins to make perfect sense. Married 41 years, Tuck Andress and Patti Cathcart continue to stoke the fires, not only of their own love, but also of their love of life and their passion for making music together. They have a long-standing tradition: Minimalist arrangements featuring Tuck's extraordinary virtuosity and Patti's rich mezzo soprano.  Renowned for her remarkable ability to touch hearts directly with her voice, Patti is also the writer, arranger and producer. Without even blinking, Tuck-the-problem-solver brags, "Patti writes and arranges; I am just the orchestra."

Tuck and Patti have achieved a rare symbiotic musical relationship that sends critics scrambling for a reference point.  They have been compared to every legendary duo you can imagine—from Fred & Ginger to the late Leonard Feather's ringing "Not since Ella Fitzgerald met Joe Pass on stage has there been so felicitious a mating as Tuck & Patti."

When they're not touring or recording, they teach as well as produce, record and mix other artists in their studio near San Francisco, part of their mission to use their expertise to help others realize their own dreams.  We feel that they express in music, the spirit, which is the energy behind The Alberta Rose Theatre.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Some folks are lucky to find what they love to do at an early age and quietly settle in for the long haul expanding and developing their work over the arc of a lifetime. Willy Porter is one of those artists. He has followed his own path to explore the sacred language that music truly is. 30 years after his solo recording debut, he continues to reach further into his guitar & pen while stretching the form of what his own music can be. He’s currently working on his 13th album for release in 2022.

Willy Porter continues on a musical and personal odyssey spanning over two decades, 11 albums, and multiple continents. His journey has been defined by an inquisitive love for humanity and the language that describes what we all hold to be true. Porter’s songs weave a universal perspective about the questions, struggles, and triumphs of human existence. His live shows are guitar-driven grit, soul, silence and muscle– at times electrifying, dynamic, and unique in the way that Porter’s voice blends and fuses with his fret work.
A largely self-taught musician, Porter began treating audiences to his brand of guitar playing and wry storytelling in the late ‘80’s while living in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1990, he released his first full-length independent album, The Trees Have Soul, and the touring life has flowed steadily ever since. Porter has literally logged millions of miles across America, Canada, the UK, and Europe, touring solo, as well as with various incarnations of the Willy Porter Band and in support of artists like Tori Amos, Paul Simon, Jethro Tull, Sting, and Jeff Beck.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Platinum recording artist, Ron Pope, made a name for himself in the early days of music streaming with the viral success of his song, “A Drop in the Ocean” - which was shared completely organically and promoted independently. Instead of stalling, Pope’s career has soared to new heights with each subsequent release. Once a die-hard New Yorker, Pope ultimately landed in Nashville where his songwriting is a natural fit for the Americana, roots, and country communities.

His last full album, Bone Structure (March 2020), received praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, CMT, Relix, The Tennessean, and more. Most recently he landed in Nashville Scene’s 12 Artists to Watch in 2022 list and released his 5-song EP, It’s Gonna Be A Long Night, supported by a US tour with sold out shows in Chicago, New York City, Denver, Atlanta, Boston, Seattle, Nashville and Minneapolis. Pope plans to release an album's worth of expertly crafted songs about lasting love, the joys of parenthood, growth, heartache and living with gratitude in 2023.

Also appearing are Nashville based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, Lydia Luce and Caleb Hearn

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Ruthie Foster is a four-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter who mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. Described by Rolling Stone as “pure magic to watch and hear,” her vocal talent was elevated in worship services at her community church. Drawing influence from legendary acts like Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin, Foster developed a unique sound unable to be contained within a single genre. That uniqueness echoes a common theme in Ruthie’s life and career - marching to the beat of her own drum.

Healing Time is the latest jewel in Foster’s accomplished career, which includes multiple Grammy nominations and collaborations with fellow luminaries like Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. For her latest, Foster contributed more to the writing process than she had on any of her previous albums, effectively refining her own song craft in the process. “With this album, I dug deep and tried to go for the best way to write,” she explains. “This album says a lot about the period we were making it in, and how I wanted to find my way out of it.”

Ruthie Foster’s ninth studio album represents a new high water mark for the veteran blues artist—a collection of songs possessing pure power, like a tidal wave of musical generosity. Healing Time finds Foster pushing her boundaries as a singer and songwriter more than ever before, creating a truly live-sounding atmosphere with the help of her band, who sound refreshingly loose and lived-in throughout these 12 songs. We’ve all been in need of some healing in recent times, and Foster’s latest provides a guide for how to move through the world with equal parts compassion and resolve.

Emotive, cinematic break-beat trio GoGo Penguin are back, playing music from their exhilarating new album Everything Is Going to Be OK – April 2023 (Sony records XXIM), together with songs from their luminous back catalogue. Bursting with the optimism of new beginnings, with a new drummer, a new record label and a subtly updated and developed sound, the band are ushering in a more sonically liberated era.

Everything Is Going to Be OK is born from a time of turbulence and loss. During a personally difficult period for the band, including deep personal loss and mourning, the studio offered the band a sanctuary from real life. The resulting project draws its strength from a shared understanding and empathy. Through our hardships, together, we will emerge stronger; everything is going to be ok.

Portland's finest musicians perform the songs of Crosby, Stills & Nash with CSN guitarist Jeff Pevar!  Featuring members of Nowhere Band, Saloon Ensemble, Love Gigantic, Solovox and more!

How often do you get to see / hear the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young) live?
Judy Blue Eyes is a new project birthed during the lock-down.  Says singer John Averill “I’ve always felt that the music of CSN - in particular the vocal harmonies - have held some kind of mystical quality for me.  About 6 years ago I had the idea of diving into CSN material and dissecting the harmony parts and perform it live, but there was never the time do devote to it.”

Enter 2020, when all live music stopped.  Feeling the acute void of singing with other people, Averill (along with fellow Nowhere Band-mates Sarah King and Jason Wells on vocals, and David Langenes on guitar and vocals) met casually in Averill’s backyard.  “After less than a dozen rehearsals scattered over a year, we realized we had learned 12 tunes.  Since then we’ve begun diving into Neil Young material for a longer show."

In July of 2021 word of Judy Blue Eyes leaked out and the yet-not-completely-formed band was offered a private gig, and other members were brought in fulfill the sound.  “In terms of lead guitar, the most unexpected thing happened when I was contacted by Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles, David Crosby, Joe Cocker, James Taylor, etc.).  He lives in Ashland and actually plays lead guitar with CSN!, so the fact that he was available and interested blew my mind.”

Rounding out the band is a stellar cast of Portland-based musicians, featuring Carl Solovox (The Nowhere Band) on keys, Ned Failing (Mexican Gunfight) on drums, Greg Hyatt (Berthaline) on bass.

For fans of CSN&Y, and for those who have witnessed the vocal harmony prowess of the Nowhere Band’s Beatles (White Album Xmas, etc) shows, this is a must see/hear evening.  The show will feature familiar CSN&Y favorites, as well as deep cuts for the die-hard fan.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Menstruation is something half the world does for a week at a time, for months and years on end, yet it remains largely misunderstood. Scientists once thought of an individual’s period as useless, and some doctors still believe it’s unsafe for a menstruating person to swim in the ocean wearing a tampon. Period counters the false theories that have long defined the study of the uterus, exposing the eugenic history of gynecology while providing an intersectional feminist perspective on menstruation science.

Blending interviews and personal experience with engaging stories from her own pioneering research, Kate Clancy challenges a host of myths and false assumptions. There is no such thing as a “normal” menstrual cycle. In fact, they’re incredibly variable and highly responsive to environmental and psychological stressors. Clancy takes up a host of timely issues surrounding menstruation, from bodily autonomy, menstrual hygiene, and the COVID-19 vaccine to the ways racism, sexism, and medical betrayal warp public perceptions of menstruation and erase it from public life.

Kate Clancy is professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she holds appointments in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies and the Program in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology, and at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. She has written for National Geographic, Scientific American, and American Scientist.
