PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Paris Chansons is an exciting French band with an Eastern European gypsy twist! Recently featured on the French news, they are known for their original renditions of French favorites from Aznavour, Dassin, Piaf, Macias, Adamo, Dalida, all the way to contemporary artists like Zaz. Their exhilarating performances are punctuated with gypsy jazz standards as well as classics in Russian, Italian, and other languages.
Three multilingual singers bring an unparalleled diversity to their shows. Julia Kantor, originally from the Ukraine, lived and studied in France where she discovered in French music a soul connection that still imbues every performance. She entrances from the stage with a sultry voice and dynamic presence. Together with her husband, Jacob Kantor, a Russian-born singer/songwriter, they launched Paris Chansons. Max Cohen grew up in Morocco steeped in French music, particularly the songs of Enrico Macias. Max’s rich velvety tone delivers beautifully nuanced renditions of his favorites, complete with a signature North African lilt.Superb musicianship anchors the ensemble, effortlessly moving from jazzy improvisation to slow-burning balladry to blistering gypsy fervor. All seasoned pros, the musicians are Jeff Lams on piano, Adam Cohen on upright bass, Endre Balogh on violin, Sinclair Lott on drums and Jacob Kantor on guitar. Paris Chansons takes you an a journey without leaving your seat (except, of course, to dance!), a spectacular celebration of French and international music that brings the world that much closer.

With her unique mix of humor, soul, and political wit, and fifteen-plus years on the road, Blanton has amassed a dedicated fan base and a small menagerie of viral hits (Rich People, Shit List, Fishin’ With You). Her latest album After the Revolution, produced by Grammy-winner Tyler Chester, was released in March of 2024.

There’s a lot going more on in the skies that’s affecting climate than just fossil fuel emissions increasing CO2! Particles in the atmosphere — like smoke from fires and pollution from engines and industrial activities — are affecting our climate. Yet, their influence on climate might surprise you – they actually act to cool the planet and “mask” some of the greenhouse gas warming.Research scientist Dr. Sarah Doherty will talk about how particles in the atmosphere are already affecting climate, how these influences are likely to change in the future, and whether these effects can be leveraged to rapidly reduce global warming to avoid many of the negative impacts of climate change.

Why are scientists considering these ideas?This talk will discuss the current climate trajectory, and why cutting emissions alone won’t be enough to keep global warming from exceeding the 1.5-2 C of warming that scientists have identified as “dangerous levels of climate change”.Dr. Sarah Doherty is a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Washington. Her interest in atmospheric science began with a year of work in Antarctica, where she was helping make measurements to better understand the ozone hole. Since getting her PhD, much of her research has involved making measurements of smoke and pollution in different parts of the world, including off the coasts of Africa, China, India, and the Arctic, and understanding how they affect climate. She has also been involved with multiple scientific assessments, including the U.S. National Climate Assessment and two international assessments of the state of the ozone layer.Tickets:

Jonatha Brooke is a singer/songwriter/guitarist extraordinaire who brings a rich musical history of evocative folk, melodic pop, and an edgier roots rock sensibility.Starting in the early '90s as part of the duo The Story and later flourishing as a solo artist, Jonatha has released an impressive collection of music. She's not only a gifted artist but has co-written and produced songs with the likes of Katy Perry, The Courtyard Hounds, and Jessica Simpson.Beyond her solo career, Jonatha is a powerhouse in songwriting and recording, offering Master Classes both online and in person. Her extensive resume includes writing for Disney films, TV shows, and composing the theme song for Joss Whedon's, “Dollhouse,” to name a few.In 2014, she wrote, produced, and starred in her own one-woman show, “My Mother Has 4 Noses,” which ran off-Broadway to rave reviews and was critics’ pick in all the New York and Theater press, including NY Times and Time Out.She was also the recipient of a McKnight Artist Fellowship Grant in 2018, won the 2019 International Acoustic Music Award for Best Female Artist for “Put the Gun Down,” and was the competition’s overall grand prize winner. In 2020, she was awarded an Independent Music Award (IMA) for her EP, “Imposter.”Brooke is currently writing songs for her own next album, as well as gearing up for live concert dates with her band.
