Some words to describe Kirk Whalum’s music are soulful, passionate, stirring. Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980’s initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “ discovered” him and brought him on tour, which led to five successful albums with Columbia records, including cache, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album, Joined at the Hip. After moving to LA, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston, amongst others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You”.

Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomal hit album released on warner bro. Records, for you perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic, and much lauded, Gospel according to jazz series, (chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4). In addition to his many solo projects, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/ jazz group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar).

Kirk is the recipient of numerous award and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three dove award nominations, NAACP image award nomination and has won two stellar awards- gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy award nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy award for best gospel song (“it’s what I do—featuring Lalah Hathaway”) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter, Jerry Peters. Kirk has also been honored with a brass note on the Memphis walk of fame and a star on the Nashville walk of fame.

Nils
Nils is a contemporary jazz artist with 5 Billboard #1 Hits and over 20 Top20 songs to his name. And his song of the decade, PCH or Pacific Coast Highway, remains the most played Smooth Jazz song since this millennium began.

Having released his latest CD “Caught In The Groove" 100% under Covid, he hit the Billboard charts at #1 on Billboard with both, the title track and his second single, "Outta Site” . His 3rd single “I Like the Way you Do it” is already #13 on Billboard and moving up the charts.

Further solidifying his place in the realm of world renowned smooth jazz artists, Nils's hit album “Caught in the Groove", has stayed at number one on SmoothJazz.com after it's release for a record breaking 48 weeks and is still at that spot today. The cool, crafty title of Nils’ latest BAJA/TSR album says it all about his studio and onstage state of mind.

Johnny Britt
Britt was hired by Otis Williams as the youngest ever musical director of the Motown Super Group The Temptations which led to Britt being the co music producer of the Emmy Award Winning TV miniseries The Temptations. Britt signed to Motown/ MoJazz Records with his own critically acclaimed group Impromp2  which released 4 albums. Britt recently scored Big as the solo trumpet player in the Oscar Nominated Motion Picture Hidden Figures with Hans Zimmer as well as an on camera solo trumpet performance with Ryan Gosling in the Oscar Nominated Motion Picture La La Land. Britt has worked with Annie Lennox as the trumpet soloist for her PBS Special and has also worked with Quincy Jones, David Bowie, Josh Groban, Jennifer Lopez, Maxwell as well as singing at the Oscars with John Legend, Common and Mary J. Blige. Britt is an honorary member of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a current member of the legendary singing group Little Anthony and The Imperials.

With a global career that spans over 30 years, Johnny Britt is one of the most versatile and beloved talents of our time.

Sean Mason
WEBSITE
Born and raised in Charlotte, NC, Sean Mason taught himself by ear how to play the piano
at the age of 13. His beginning musical roots included Gospel, Classical, Hip-Hop, and R&B
music, but then he discovered jazz and decided to make a career of it.

To further his knowledge, Sean went to study music at The University of North Carolina at
Greensboro. After two years of study, Sean decided to move to New York City and transfer
his studies to The Juilliard School, studying for another two years before ultimately leaving
to pursue his music interests independently. In his short but already groundbreaking career,
Sean has played and toured with many jazz professionals, prominently including Branford
Marsalis and Wynton Marsalis, but among many others. Sean is based in New York City,
and aside from being a sideman member of many successful jazz bands around the city,
Sean leads his own band, “The Sean Mason Trio”, which performs and tours across the
globe.

In addition to his performing career, Sean is also a composer, orchestrator, and music
director in the musical theatre space.

at the age of 13.

Gerald Albright, born and raised in Los Angeles, was an accomplished saxophonist well before he enrolled into Redlands University. Months after graduation he joined jazz pianist/ R&B singer Patrice Rushen and took the place of the bass player and finished up the tour with her playing both the saxophone and bass. He then became the consummate session and touring musician in the 1980’s, working alongside artists from Anita Baker, Ray Parker JR., The Temptations and Maurice White to Les McCann, and Whitney Houston.

Albright then launched his solo career in the infancy of what became the smooth jazz format. He has become a core part of the genre with chart-topping albums, countless radio hits and as a member of many all-star tours. In the later 1990’s he fronted a big band and toured with Phil Collins. Between his last two Grammy nominations for his solo albums, he enjoyed his collaboration on two huge hits, 24/7 with guitarist Norman Brown and Summer Horns by Dave Koz and Friends, which were also nominated for Grammy’s in the category of Best Pop Instrumental Albums.

Because Albright’s musical muse has taken him to so many fascinating locales along the contemporary R & B/ Urban jazz spectrum, he’s joyfully defied easy categorizations.

“Whether in concert, listening to my music over the radio or CD player, I always want my listeners to be taken on a musical journey with different textures, rhythms, chord progressions and moods. I want people to know where I’ve been and where I’m going, and to let them hear that I’m in a really good place in my life.” – Gerald Albright
