Do you see something and think, “I could make that”? Join us for a week of design challenges that will prove and improve your skills as we celebrate the making spirit in each of us! Experiment with cool tools and terrific techniques to express yourself in new ways. Whether you’re into theater, sports, books, or bands, we’ll take your personal passion and transform that energy into 2D and 3D projects that stretch your imagination and your skills. Investigate what makers around the world have created as you explore the Museum’s galleries, and then dive into your own DIY!

Museum Mysteries

Calling all junior detectives! Grab your magnifying glass and get ready to sleuth as we try to solve some marvelous museum mysteries. We’ll dig deep into the lives of famous artists, search for clues in paintings, visit the DMA’s Conservation Studio, nose around art made thousands of years ago, and more. In the studio, swap your detective hat for your artist’s apron and investigate the mysteries of materials as we paint, collage, and draw. The game is afoot!

Paint the Town

Get comfortable with the basics of painting and drawing. Explore the Museum’s galleries to see how different artists use paint, and then develop your own unique painting style. Have fun experimenting in the studio as you build skills in brush techniques, color mixing, and design while using watercolor, tempera, inks, mixed media, and acrylics. Sketch in the galleries, and then grab a paintbrush to paint big in the studio.

Stitching Stories

Can you tell a story with fabric, buttons, and thread? Find out as we learn basic stitches and use fabrics and fibers to create works of art. We’ll look at early American quilts, Anishinaabeg beaded bags, colorful mola from Panama, and Indonesian batiks to see how artists have stitched their stories. Then, in the studio, you’ll create a fabric collage and a one-of-a-kind plushie, and experiment with yarn, buttons, and beads.

Taste of the Museum

Have you ever seen art that looks good enough to eat? Forget your fork and spoon—we’ll use paintbrushes and pencils to capture the delicious combination of art and food. Explore still-life paintings, decorative bowls and plates, and art that tantalizes the senses in this sweet and savory exploration of the galleries. Then mix up your own artsy recipes in the studio to create a feast for the eyes. Bon appétit!

Miniature Worlds

Dust off your dioramas and measure your miniatures—it’s time to build your own small world! Whether for a theater set, an amusement park, or a sci-fi movie, miniature models create illusions, make their own kind of magic, and spark our imaginations. Look at paintings, sculptures, furniture, and more in the galleries to get ideas, and then work in the studio to design, build, and embellish your own miniature world. Make your world come to life with unique characters and a one-of-a-kind story.

Museum Makers

What would you do if you ran the Museum for a day? Step into the roles of curator, designer, and featured artist in this camp all about YOU! Explore the galleries to discover art that makes your heart skip a beat. Then experiment in the studio with your favorite colors, materials, and techniques to create artwork that showcases your unique point of view. Create your own mini-museum by building gallery walls, curating an exhibition, crafting frames, painting and sculpting masterpieces, and designing posters. It’s a kid museum-takeover!

Art Around the World

No tickets or passports required for this around the world adventure! We’ll investigate cultures and art from the tip of Africa to the top of Europe, and from sea to shining sea. Travel through time and space with a walk through the Museum’s galleries, gathering inspiration for creating your own wonders of the world in your travel notebook. Then, in the studio, bring your imagined creations to life with paper, paint, glue, found objects, and more. Bon voyage!

Rainbow Connection

Let’s go somewhere over the rainbow! Search the galleries for every color of the rainbow, and then investigate the science of rainbows and color with fun hands-on experiments. Learn all about ROY G BIV, play with prisms, and paint, draw, and collage your very own rainbow connection.

Roaming in the Rainforest

There’s a rumble in the rainforest—who could it be? This camp will take you on an artful journey through winding rivers and under towering leaves to discover the different layers of the rainforest. Explore every shade of green, create rhythmic rain sticks, stamp slithering snakes, and craft more unbe-leaf-able art. Don’t forget your bug spray!

Adventures in Animation

Whether you like old-school Disney movies, Japanese anime, or Claymation, the art of creating pictures that move goes way back! In this camp, spend the week crafting your own story and bringing it to life through the magic of stop-motion animation. We’ll find visual inspiration in the galleries, and then create flipbooks, storyboards, backgrounds, characters, and an animated short using low and high tech. Campers may bring a personal iPad to camp for creating their animated short, but it is not required.

Nature Detectives

Investigate the connections between the visual arts and the natural world in this camp for nature-loving kids. Go on nature walks in the galleries and discover how artists around the world are inspired by Mother Nature’s palette and artistry. Explore ecosystems, animal and plant patterns, weather systems, and more, and create your own nature-art in the studio with traditional art supplies and natural materials.

Globetrotters

Travel the world without leaving town! Our daily itineraries will include jaunts to Asia, North and South America, Europe, and more as we visit the Museum’s galleries and investigate art from around the world. Take a break in the studio between destinations for an art “pit stop,” and capture your adventure by painting, drawing, sculpting, and collaging.
