    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Join us to celebrate the opening of our summer exhibitions: "On Location in Malibu" and "Rediscovering Constance von Briesen"!

The opening reception is Saturday, May 11 from 3 to 6 PM, with complimentary refreshments and kid-friendly art activities in the courtyard. At 4 PM, Weisman Museum director Andrea Gyorody moderates a roundtable discussion about "On Location in Malibu" with jurors from the California Art Club; seating for the conversation is limited and will be first come, first served.

"On Location in Malibu" celebrates the continued vitality of California Impressionism and plein air painting by showcasing new paintings of Malibu created by contemporary members of the historic California Art Club. Works of art on view will be available for acquisition, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art and the California Art Club, the oldest art association in the state.

"Rediscovering Constance von Briesen" is the first solo museum exhibition of work by Constance von Briesen (1915–2000), a multitalented artist and craftswoman who lived for nearly fifty years in southern California, making her home in Rustic Canyon. Active for many years in the association Women Painters West, as well as in the Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles Art Associations, she frequently exhibited her work in juried shows across the region. Her landscape paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures offer an exquisite close-up view of the California terrain, capturing creeks, root systems, bare trees, and drought-stricken desert.

Registration for the reception is recommended but not required. All aspects of the opening reception are wheelchair accessible; for additional information about accessibility, please email museum@pepperdine.edu. Both exhibitions will remain on view through July 28, 2024.

A show that walks the line!

For the past 17 years, Garner and his band have faithfully recreated Cash's biggest hits with stunning accuracy in this not-to-be-missed musical event. This world-class tribute to the ‘Man in Black’ has been featured live in concert on PBS stations, and has even performed at Folsom and San Quentin Prisons where Johnny Cash recorded his biggest albums. The show is a fun, toe-tapping trip down memory lane honoring Cash's life and music, all set to his signature boom-chicka-boom sound. Enjoy all the hits of the Man in Black – “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” and more!

Garner and his band have performed more than 600 professional shows, including a special concert at Folsom State Prison in 2008 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Cash’s infamous live album recorded behind prison walls. Gene Beley, one of two reporters in Cash’s entourage at the historic 1968 Folsom Prison concert, says this about Garner and his show:

"Garner and his band give concertgoers their money's worth," says Beley. "This act will not disappoint the people who wish to resurrect that classic Johnny Cash voice and rhythm."

In addition to performing across the United States, Garner’s group has released three full-length albums, making them the most recorded and published Johnny Cash tribute show in the nation.

For Garner, the love of Johnny Cash music started at an early age.

“I started listening to Johnny Cash music when I was about 12 years old,” said Garner. “The first song I heard by him was ‘Don’t Take Your Guns to Town’ and I was hooked. A few years later, I saw the Man in Black in concert and got to meet him backstage following the show. Shaking hands with Johnny Cash is something I’ll never forget.”

    Show members

James Garner – Lead vocals, rhythm guitar

Reggie Gay – Lead guitar, vocals

    Chris Akin– Bass, vocals
