PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Punch needle is a fiber craft that dates back to the 1880’s, but is experiencing a big resurgence in popularity with more modern designs and applications. Existing somewhere between rug hooking and embroidery, punch needle involves punching a needle through fabric in a repetitive motion to create amazing designs with loops of yarn. It’s a fun, relaxing and easy craft that can be used to produce wall art, patches, pillows, rugs… just about anything made with a textile! And with a great set of tools, even first timers can complete a beautiful piece. In our online version of this class, you will start a punch needle project and follow along as the instructor guides you through the pattern. Along the way, you will learn about material selection, loading your punch tool, what yarns work best, how to work with a pattern to create your design, and various punch needle techniques. Please note that you will probably not complete the entire project during class, but you will learn specific options for how to finish your piece after! And though you’ll be following a set pattern for this class, you will learn how to design and produce your own pattern for your future punch needle projects!

For this class, you will work with our Desert Doors design pattern, featured in the photos above. Desert Doors is an easy to follow pattern based on modern geometrics and desert cactus designs. It includes an optional background, and was designed by Kelly Malone, co-founder of WorkshopSF and owner of the newly launched The Punch Needle Shop.
