BVT and the Naples Historical Society are teaming up to present a bit of Naples' theatrical history with a staged reading of The Hero, a drama written in 1921 by Naples' born playwright/actor Gilbert Emery. The play, which played on Broadway in 1921 and was featured in an anthology of The Best Plays of 1920-21, concerns family tensions in the aftermath of the first world war. After a recent New York revival of the play, the New York times called Emery's script "remarkably nuanced, filled with gray areas and ambiguities." Local actors from the community will perform the reading, and the historical society will also add details and information about playwright Emery and the historical context of the play and it's first production.
