    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Denmark. It’s 2 a.m. A hotel room. Three weary travelers, an unexpected will and a production of “Hamlet” to rehearse before morning. Tragedy and humor blend in this new play about the challenges of family, forgiveness, and Shakespeare.

Real-life family – Susanna Hamnett, Joshua MacGregor and Lily MacGregor – play the bereaved family of the once-great actor, Henry Elder, billed to perform his career-defining solo of Hamlet at the famous Elsinore Shakespeare Festival. But as they discover, Henry Elder is determined not to let anything as inconvenient as death prevent him from being there. With Shakespeare’s "Hamlet" as the pivot around which the family’s story revolves, the play is both absurd and poignant.

Written and performed by award-winning actor Susanna Hamnett, along with her son and daughter, this piece premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022.  It is an award-winner of the Carol Tambor Incentive Award, chosen by the Carol Tambor Theatrical Foundation to encourage new writing and live performance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Mariachi Herencia de Mexico: Our Latin Thing

    Overland Park, KS
    United States
Doors at 7:00 PM, Show at 7:30 PM

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Fresh off a 2023 Latin Grammy nomination for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album for “Herederos,” Mariachi Herencia de México delves into the iconic sounds of New York’s ‘60s and ‘70s Latin music explosion for the band’s sixth studio release. It’s a movement born abroad and nurtured by immigrant communities in the heart of Manhattan.

The percussive and horn-driven music combines Latin and Afro-Caribbean rhythms to create the first pan-Latin musical genre that reflects the people who performed, enjoyed, and danced to its beats. This was the era when legendary musicians like Tito Puente, Tito Rodríguez, and Johnny Pacheco led the most exciting orchestras of their time at dance halls like the Palladium Ballroom or Cheetah Nightclub.

In an explosion of colors and sounds, “Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa),” a clever homage to the groundbreaking salsa documentary released by Fania Records in 1972, includes 12 brilliantly mastered tracks that combine the band’s mariachi virtuosity with Spanish Harlem’s vibrant percussion line. Each song is an ode to Latin music legends like Héctor Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, Benny Moré, Celia Cruz, and the three-guitar trio, Los Panchos.

Paragon Ragtime Orchestra in Meet Me at the Fair!: Music from the Great World's Fairs

    Overland Park, KS
    United States
Doors at 1:30 PM, Show at 2:00 PM

    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

“Meet Me at the Fair!” is a two-hour spectacular musical celebration of the world’s fairs, including the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, and 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition.

Musical exhibits rotate, but works by Offenbach, Joplin, Moses-Tobani, and Sousa are the core attraction, performed by Rick Benjamin and the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra (PRO), the official orchestra and conductor of the U.S. Pavilion of the 1992 World’s Fair. Music played a key role in the success of these international festivals, launching both hit songs and the illustrious careers of many American musicians (including Scott Joplin and Sousa).

This new PRO program reunites stirring world’s fair hits with the continuous projections of magnificent fairground images. PRO gets the audience involved (“Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis”), and as a finale, the orchestra accompanies the moving picture travelogue, historic world’s fair films by Thomas Edison and company. All is accompanied by evocative narration from conductor Rick Benjamin.

Funky Mama (Krista Tatschl Eyler), who has been creating original roll ‘n’ roll for kids and families for 20 years, was long ago dubbed “Kansas City’s favorite singing mama.” Beloved by families across the metro, Funky Mama scored national recognition when she performed at the 2007 White House Easter Egg Roll in Washington, D.C. Her fun and funky music covers many genres and styles and has been played in hundreds of cars and kitchens across the country.

Eyler’s powerful, blues-drenched voice sounds like she would be right at home anywhere – harmonizing with any of the great soul singers of the ‘60s, belting out rock ‘n’ roll, taking the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, singing folksy jug band standards, joining in with the best of Louisiana’s Zydeco bands, or soaring over the top of a mesmerizing up-tempo gospel group. Mostly though, Funky Mama’s music is just plain fun.
