    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

The Tender Land - Aaron Copland

The Tender Land, set in the rural American 1930s heartland—perhaps on Route 66, The Mother Road, not too far from here—tells the intimate story of a young woman and her family at the moment of decision. Laurie, about to graduate, knows her family is proud of her and hopeful, but she feels strange about her place in the world—at once drawn to familiar traditions and beckoned by the wide unknown. Enter strangers. Enter unexpected, tender love. And enter, necessarily, loss and letting go. This coming-of-age tale is full of fun, dancing, thanksgiving, and becoming. Copeland’s music, including some of his best-known choral scores, “The Promise of Living” and “Stomp Your Foot,” achieves its fullest potential. Bring your family. Let your heart be tugged, turned, and set free.

    THE LITTLE PRINCE
    music by
    Rachel Portman

    libretto by
    Nicholas Wright

Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince, based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le petit Prince, is an imaginative, melodic setting of the bond of a Little Prince from a neighboring asteroid and a Pilot whose plane has crash-landed in the desert. The two fight against time to learn about beauty, friendship, loss, and healing as they travel together and meet colorful, often puzzling, characters. An opera for all ages, this sonorous score with its fun, vivid encounters lifts the Prince, the Pilot, and the audience toward discovery—toward heartfelt ways of seeing and loving. Experience a beloved story through music, as we create a night of adventure and wonder the entire family will enjoy.

*First three rows in the orchestra are removed for staging effects. Row D in the orchestra will be the first row available for purchase.

The Gillioz is a historic venue built in 1926. As a result of this, the seating in the balcony is closer together than the seating in the orchestra section. If you or a member of your party is tall and require more leg room, we would advise purchasing tickets in the orchestra section.
