    PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION

Manny Laureano, Music Director & Conductor
    Steven Amundson, Guest Conductor

    Steven Amundson – Handprints
Michael Gilbertson – Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, Manny Laureano, trumpet
Johannes Brahms – Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68

This concert is your opportunity to walk through time with the BSO! We will honor the BSO’s past by bringing former Music Director Steven Amundson to the podium to open the program with one of his own works, Handprints, that was written to honor the BSO’s 50th anniversary. Amundson will then lead the orchestra through the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Michael Gilbertson, with current Music Director Manny Laureano taking the soloist’s spotlight! After intermission, we’ll reach back into time by performing the First Symphony in C Minor of Johannes Brahms, as Maestro Laureano takes the podium as conductor.

A reception honoring past Music Directors and Concertmasters will follow the concert.

Howard Hanson - Symphony No. 2, Op. 30, Romantic

For the last few years, the BSO has committed to celebrating American composers as much as we can. In this concert we expand that to include the music of North America and Mexican composer Arturo Marquéz with our premiere performance of the seductive and rhythmic Danzón No. 2. We’re also pleased to bring back pianist Clare Longendyke to play George Gershwin’s classic Rhapsody in Blue. The BSO will wrap up this concert with the influential and stunning Symphony No. 2 by Howard Hanson also known as “The Romantic.” In this 1930 work you will hear music that later influenced composer John Williams.
