PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
The musical sensation, FOR THE LOVE OF HARLEM, profiles a weekend in the lives of the artistic visionaries who shaped the 1920-30’s Harlem Renaissance. Legendary figures like Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Richard Bruce Nugent, Wallace Thurman and Zora Neale Hurston are given real human faces. Their struggles between public recognition and self-identity are presented in a way rarely associated with these legends.
FOR THE LOVE OF HARLEM takes place during the zenith of the flowering of African American cultural and intellectual life. This period is referred to as the 1920’s – 30’s Harlem Renaissance (also known as the Black Literary Renaissance and the New Negro Movement). Nestled in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, this movement influenced the entire cultural spectrum; literature, drama, music, visual art, and dance. The Movement afforded unique ways to explore the historic struggles of Black America and the contemporary relevance of Black life after The Great Migration.
FOR THE LOVE OF HARLEM celebrates the courage, achievement, frailty and hardship of these creatives. Their artistic contributions have had a profound impact on African American identity. These dynamic artists redefined how Americans, and the World, viewed the African-American.
