Celebrating Black History Month offers programs for adults and children.
At 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., Museum volunteer Eric Madison presents the origins of segregation on streetcars beginning in the 19th century. He will discuss the attempts made nationwide to challenge both the custom and later the codification of "separate but equal" practices.
At 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., Director of Education Karen Lipson shares the book Lizzie Demands a Seat Elizabeth Jennings Fights for Streetcar Rights, followed by an activity. Note: This presentation is recommended for grades K-5.
All sessions include a ride on the demonstration railway and tour of exhibits.
