PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Cultural Intimacy In Motion is an intersection of four artists that explodes conventional notions of cross-cultural dialogue. VCUarts, in partnership with the Modlin Center for the Arts, presents two collaborative dance performances and an in-depth discussion with the artists who made them. Torobaka unites classical Indian Kathak with Spanish Flamenco in a duet performed to live music by the acclaimed London choreographer Akram Khan, and Sevillian-born Israel Galván. Torobaka is a thrilling stylistic dialogue. Inspired by the rhythmic roots of civilization and the sacred relationship between the hunter and animal, the performers use innovative choreography, exquisite technique, and contemporary storytelling to create a distinctly new form of dance. Israel Galván has been called “revolutionary,” “avant-garde,” and simply “a genius.” Known for his complex and rapid-fire footwork punctuated by moments of stillness and silence, Galván dances flamenco on the cutting edge.

Presented to diverse audiences in the Mid-Atlantic region, portions of this culturally dynamic project will also be distributed nationally via live stream and/or archived high-definition broadcast.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 by legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet, Sergei Radchenko. He sought to bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classical ballet.

The Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipa’s career, is often considered the finest achievement of classical ballet. A baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. With magical stage effects, and courtly splendor, the fairy tale is replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, and a beautiful princess and dream prince.

Modlin Center Members at the Partner Level and above are invited to a pre-show reception in the Richmond CenterStage Donor Lounge beginning at 6:30PM.

Lewis Black is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sold out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

Lewis’ live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Lewis yells so they don’t have to. A passionate performer who is more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

Fully renovated and restored, the historic Carpenter Theatre is the cornerstone of the Dominion Arts Center. It features state-of-the-art lighting and world-class acoustics while still preserving its Old World feel. Its large stage, great acoustics and 20 dressing rooms make it a performer’s dream venue. Carpenter Theatre’s main lobby includes two refreshment bars, concierge station and a gift shop, with two additional refreshment bars upstairs. Four large mosaic tile murals of parrots serve as the backdrop to the four refreshment bars and are a tribute to the handmade parrot that has been perched in the lobby since the theater first opened in 1928. Upon entering the refurbished Carpenter Theatre - with nearly 1,800 seats - audiences enjoy newly installed fiber optic stars twinkling overhead in the repainted midnight sky ceiling, one of the many preserved and enhanced elements of John Eberson's original theater design.
