She grew up singing at a young age and began her professional career by singing country music, then switched to bluegrass and joined the band called Clearwater, which included her future husband Johnny Williams. During this period, she earned a number of awards, including four Female Vocalist of the Year awards from SPBGMA. In 1994, she released her debut solo album, Dreams Do Come True, on the Flyin' Cloud label. By 1996, Clearwater was renamed Jeanette Williams and Clearwater. That same year, she recorded a second album with her husband, titled Johnny and Jeanette Williams. The group released a Clearwater album, Blue Ridge Mountain Sun. Jeanette and Johnny both won the Chris Austin Songwriter Contest for bluegrass at Merlefest and in 1999, Jeanette released another solo album, Cherry Blossoms in the Springtime. By this time, Jeanette's powerful vocals were the central focus of Clearwater, and the band was renamed the Jeanette Williams Band.
