In this Sewing 102 class, you will build on the basic sewing skills learned in our Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp in order to make your very own little black caftan dress!! This is one of our favorite dress shapes, because it flatters so many bodies! With the draped nature of the linen, the ruched bodice, tie belt, and the flattering cut of the sleeve, this dress is the perfect start to your growing me-made wardrobe! We handpicked this linen because it’s easy to sew, and because linen wears and washes so nicely over time! This class will cover all necessary skills to create this dress, including how to sew a neck facing, ruching, french seams, side seam pockets, and how to use interfacing. Other skills covered include proper ironing, as well as small alterations like hemming, which will make your garment fit perfectly! No prior garment construction knowledge is necessary, but basic sewing skills are required to take this class. Also, fabric material will be pre-cut ahead of class so we can focus on construction, but we will demonstrate how to cut a commercial pattern in the beginning of class.
We use the Closet Case Pattern "The Charlie Caftan", and sizes will be pre-selected before class to ensure everyone gets the size they prefer. When signing up, please go over the size chart and select the size based on bust size. The waist and bodice is looser because of the ruching and waist belt, so bust is the only part we need to ensure fits perfectly. If you are between sizes, just size up as there is a good amount of ease. Email us with any size questions, or if you feel you don’t fit within the size range and we can help you out!
Prerequisite: In order to attend this class, you MUST have taken either Sewing 101 or Sewing Bootcamp at WorkshopSF. (We’ll also take you if you’re already competent and comfortable using a sewing machine.) We’ll briefly go over the Janome 2212 at the beginning of class. If you have questions about the sewing skill level required by this class, please email us.
Supplies Needed: None
