In Simple Ceramics: Sculpting with Air Dry Clay, ceramics designer Hannah Louise will teach you how to build beautiful, decorative, and functional clay objects using air dry clay! This simple ceramics class will focus on three main ceramics projects: a small figurine / totem sculpture, a lapel pin, and a small dish. First, you will learn techniques to prepare and hand sculpt your clay. Using simple tools such as sponges, toothpicks, and knives, as well as a small sculpting wheel, you will further mold and sculpt your air dry clay into its desired form. Once each clay object’s form is complete, you will learn how to dry them quickly so paints and shellac can be added, resulting in a super-shiny, fancy-looking piece. Each student will have time to decorate their work with the instructor’s guidance using acrylic paint and permanent felt tip pens, before adding the final glaze. Each student will leave with three finished air dry clay projects, as well as instructions on how to take care of your newly minted ceramic sculptures. You will also receive an equipment and supplies list so that you can recreate additional air dry clay sculptures at home!
This is a perfect class to get your feet wet with ceramics before you dive into a full blown ceramics course that involves multiple glazes and a kiln. Many students and ceramics enthusiasts have found that working initially with air dry clay helped them to understand the basic principles of shaping and forming, and gave them practice in decoration, before they moved on to the more complex processes of glazing and kiln firing.
