Based in Montreal, Niyaz has created a 21st century global trance tradition by blending medieval Sufi poetry and folk songs from their native Iran and surrounding Persian Gulf countries with rich acoustic instrumentation and state-of-the-art modern electronics. Founded in 2004, Niyaz is a collaboration between two composers, captivating vocalist Azam Ali and multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian. Both artists have independently received multiple JUNO award nominations. As a team, they have released three critically acclaimed albums released on Six Degrees Records, all of which have debuted at #1 on iTunes and garnered features on NPR and PRI, creating a loyal fan base worldwide.
In March 2015, Niyaz broke new ground with their latest album The Fourth Light. Mixed by Grammy nominee producer/electronic musician Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Killers, Arcade Fire), the album unveiled nine compelling songs featuring exotic rhythms, outstanding acoustic performances and the bewitching melancholy of front woman Azam Ali's voice, all seamlessly blended together into a sleek production of richly textured arrangements, sweeping choruses, and electronic beats.
The Fourth Light Project evolved from this release into a cutting-edge immersive, multisensory experience. In collaboration with interactive designer and visual artist Jerome Delapierre, Niyaz have created a live music and sacred dance performance featuring interactive technologies and advanced projection and body-mapping techniques that respond to sound and movement in real time. The end result creates a new kind of digital scenography and live musical experience -a synthesis of sound, space, image and light that invites the audience inside the art to share in a unique performance experience.
