ADDRESS: 1431 17th Street, San Francisco, CA 94107
WorkshopSF is excited to partner with The Clayroom to bring you this Friday night class that introduces you to the world of pottery and ceramics! Part technical instruction, and part creative / social hang, this class will get your hands good and dirty as professional ceramicist Sarah Duyer shows you how to transform a big ball of clay into fun (and functional) ceramic objects! Think cups, mugs, boxes, tiles, or even small plant holders! You’ll learn specific handbuilding techniques such as slab and coiling in order to shape and sculpt your clay. You will also learn to use slipping and scoring techniques, as well as a simple set of tools, to create texture and underglazes for your more decorative surfaces. Once complete, your clay masterpieces will be glazed, fired, finished, and ready for pick up at a later date. Each student will receive enough clay for two finished projects!
Supplies Needed: None. We supply all materials and tools, including aprons, but please wear clothes you wouldn’t mind getting dusty!
Instructor Bio: Sarah Duyer has been working in ceramics for nearly a decade and continues to experiment and learn more about the medium. Since earning her BFA in Studio art from the University of Delaware, Sarah has worked in all types of studios from community spaces and summer camps to high volume production. She currently splits her time as studio lead for MMclay and working in her own studio making fun, functional, and sculptural ceramics that she sells at local stores and events around the Bay Area.
