THE SMOKING POPES
Musical icon Morrissey raved: “Did you ever hear Born to Quit?" of the band's landmark 1995 album. "It’s by the Smoking Popes. I thought that album was extraordinary, the most lovable thing I’d heard in years”.
Chicago's own Smoking Popes built a relationship with their legion of fans and fellow musicians by melding raw songs about bittersweet heartache with soaring melodies, power chords and punk spirit. Their latest album This is Only a Test, released in March, is perfect proof that their sparkling lyricism and ineffable charm is still intact.
with TRAPPER SHOEPP AND THE SHADES
“Replacements-meets-Uncle Tupelo influence rings clear…Trapper Schoepp & The Shades can only get better.” (4/5 stars) –Alternative Press
In 2012, Trapper Shoepp released his national debut Run, Engine, Run with his band the shades on Side One Dummy Records as a love letter to their beloved home state of Wisconsin. The album’s mix of rocking tunes and sweet Americana-laced tales has helped pave the way for the group to share stages all over the country alongside such kindred spirits as The Wallflowers, The Jayhawks, Old 97's, Frank Turner and more.
In addition to gaining respect from some of their favorite artists, they’ve been featured in Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and Huffington Post calls 24-year-old Schoepp "A master storyteller." The band also was the recipient of 88.9 Radio Milwaukee’s 2012 Album of the Year and Wisconsin Area Music Industry’s 2012 Song of the Year.
a BLIND VENETIANS REUNION
With Matt Suhar on lead vocals, The Blind Venetians performed anywhere and anytime they could. Backed by Cyril Wochok, John Gleed , Todd Allison, Matt Szejda and Jimmy Madla, Naperville's own would show up to parties in high school with drums, amps and a small PA and talk the host into having a live band that night. The band gained popularity quickly and moved into the city to play the larger venues and in front of national acts (The Smashing Pumpkins, Material Issue, Alex Chilton, Bash & Pop, Hole, Dee Dee Ramone, Goober & The Peas / Jack White's old band, Pere Ubu, etc.)...Relentlessly touring and doing it on their own they toured the country performing at CBGB's, The Cabaret Metro, The Riviera, Cubby Bear, festivals and underground rock clubs. During their hey day The Blind Venetians were in constant battle with the cheese metal phase that stunk up the nation until bands like Nirvana changed the landscape of rock. With a hint of The Replacements, Superchunk, The Clash and The Jam.
plus TIM JONES, COURTNEY KAISER and friends
Some of Matt's favorite musicians and friends come together for a very special set. Tim aka Jonesy is the vocals and guitar for the Southern-tinged rock/country/folk outfit Truth & Salvage Co. and his own solo projects. Courtney Kaiser is half of the low-fi, song-driven, harmony-heavy Brooklyn-based Kaiser Cartel duo.
