In this beginner screen printing class, we’ll get you started on the road to achieving that screen printing glory by teaching you the fundamental processes that goes into producing screen print images. You’ll gain an understanding of how screens are made and how emulsion and exposure units are used to "burn" the images onto the screens. We will demonstrate how to use a press (table top and t-shirt presses) to pull silk screen images onto paper or fabric. You will also get a tutorial on the different inks available in screen printing, as well as the types of surfaces that work best. Once all of the demos are done, it’s printing time!! You will spend the last half of class printing with our house screens, which include rad images, fun phrases, spirit animals, popular graphics, and more. You will have a chance to dive into our wide range of colorful inks and artist / vintage paper to start experimenting with your new screen printing skills! And, our instructor will be there to assist should you hit any obstacles or have any questions while printing. You will leave class with a handful of silk screen prints, a working knowledge of the screen printing process, and some helpful insight on what to do next should you desire to keep further your screen printing acumen!
A couple of important points to note:
1- This is a fantastic starter class in order to dip your toes into the world of screen printing. However, as you will learn, screen printing is a complicated process, involving a few expensive (and easy to ruin) pieces of equipment, and requiring a lot of practice to master. So, don’t expect to come out ready to launch your own t-shirt line after only one class! But DO expect to have some great fun and learn about this amazing printing technique.
2- This class does NOT offer custom screens, but instead, utilizes our library of house screens with hundreds of images, text, and themes. If you are interested in a custom screen, we can refer you to a business that can handle that request.
Supplies Needed: None. We supply the screens + ink, as well as several cool types of papers and patches. However, feel free to bring extra fabric, paper, aprons, t-shirts or other goodies if you would like to screen WorkshopSF images onto them to take home. We also normally have some fun things for sale that you can print on (such as blank tees, totes and koozies).
The rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy - this includes cancellation, re-books, gift certificates, moving classes, etc. For more information on canceling a class, please read our cancellation policy. All classes are 21+ unless you email for permission. If any questions, please email us at info AT workshopsf DOT org.
ALL CLASSES TAKE PLACE AT WORKSHOP, 1798 MCALLISTER STREET UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED ON THE TITLE AND LISTING.
