The year is 1950, and while Americans are dealing with post-World War II life,
the start of the Cold War, and the looming civil rights movement, an African-American family — father Godfrey Crump and his two daughters Ernestine, 17 and Ermina, 15 — are reeling from the loss of Godfrey’s wife and the girls’ mother. As Godfrey tries to find solace by moving the family from Florida to Brooklyn, both girls try to adjust to their new lives, while their aunt tries to undo the conservative teachings of Godfrey with her free-thought philosophy. But tension reaches its peak when Godfrey falls in love with a German woman and brings her home to meet the family.
