VERY IMPORTANT: Western Editions has moved to the East Bay into an artist co-op, but don’t worry our workshops are just as awesome as ever. Bigger space, more sunshine, plenty of parking...what else could you ask for? MacArthur Bart is just over a mile up the road and there is a FREE Emery-go-round shuttle that runs every 10-15 minutes and will deliver you to our door, or pretty close at least. The Hollis Line drops you at 45th and Hollis or the Powell Line drops you at 40th and Hollis. We are now located at 1420 45th Street #40, Emeryville, CA 94608 in the big red garage roll up door! Please contact Western Editions directly at westerneditions@gmail.com if you have any further questions.
In Letterpress x Modern Calligraphy Workshop you will learn techniques for both letterpress printing and modern calligraphy. Does it get any better than that?? You will work with Taylor and Erin from Western Editions to learn a bit of letterpress history and the basic set up and printing on a 800 pound Vandercook Proofing Press. You will also work with Queeny of the Modern Calligraphy MeetUp group and get an introduction to modern calligraphy techniques.
You will have a chance to practice your hand-styles and develop your own calligraphy technique. In addition, you will letterpress 10 pre-designed calligraphy notecards. During the workshop you’ll see how to turn your calligraphy into a digital file that can then be letterpress printed. You will leave with 10 letterpress notecards and all the supplies to continue with your calligraphy (paper, ink and quill). Not to mention super inspired!
Queeny Lu’s Bio: Queeny Lu is the traveler behind the calligraphy and with her passion for travel and calligraphy, she aspires to create custom calligraphed pieces of the highest quality in hand calligraphy. Having started learning Arabic Calligraphy for a couple of years while studying Arabic, she naturally transitioned over to pointed-pen calligraphy and is a co-organizer for a Meetup.com group called San Francisco Modern Calligraphy. If you need hand calligraphy to make a one-of-a-kind wedding, fun prints for your home, or chalkboard art for your business, Queeny has developed skills of pointed pen calligraphy, different language scripts, watercolor, illustration and chalkboard art.
Western Editions is Erin Fong and Taylor Reid, two friends who met while living in San Francisco’s Western Addition (...get it?) and have relocated across the Bay to an artist co-operative in sunny Emeryville, California. Both Erin and Taylor have been printing since 2007 with a background ranging from commercial letterpress printshops to fine art letterpress and book arts. The stars aligned and both landed in San Francisco at the same time, where they met and figured out…wait for it…that they had both learned letterpress in the same dusty old library at the University of Nevada, Reno! Though at different times, Erin and Taylor both fell in love with letterpress in the same room, on the same machine! MAGIC, we know!
The rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy - this includes cancellation, re-books, gift certificates, moving classes, etc. For more information on canceling a class, please read our cancellation policy. All classes are 21+ unless you email for permission. If any questions, please email us at info AT workshopsf DOT org.
