Established in what was one of the first proprietary land grants in the new colony of Charles Town, the Harleston Village neighborhood began developing in 1770, laying out large boulevards named after both American and English war heroes and politicians. Here the great rice and cotton plantation owners of the early 19th century established rice and lumber mills close by the “town” residences in which they dwelt during the social seasons of the antebellum period.
