Jazz Underground Series: Kent Jordan – Out of this World
Doors Open: 7:00 PM
Flautist, Kent Jordan will lead a supporting ensemble made up of students from Loyola’s jazz program in a concert of classic jazz standards and iconic original compositions.
A New Orleans native, Jordan is one of an infinite number of prolific musicians that swells from within the concrete jungle of the Crescent City. Although often regarded as a fusion musician, he is an assertive, cogent player of modern jazz as well, particularly on alto flute.
The intrepid flautist was part of legendary drummer, Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine, an all-star group which included Nicholas Payton, Javon Jackson and Ravi Coltrane. He also contributed his powerful, large-toned flute sound to recordings by Bheki Mseleku, his younger brother, trumpeter Marlon Jordan and guitarist Kevin Eubanks. In addition, Jordan plays occasionally with Wynton Marsalis’ Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and can be heard on the trumpeter’s “Express Crossing”, featured on the orchestra’s “They Came To Swing” (Columbia 1994). In 1998, he was a featured soloist on drummer Warren Smith’s “Cats Are Stealing My Shit” (Mapleshade).
