In Print Making 101: Cyanotype Printing, we will introduce you to the beautiful art of cyanotype printing! This photographic process is also known as sun printing because the sun can be utilized as the main light source for your exposures. Cyanotype printing is unique in that it allows you to use real life objects, stencils, drawings, and even photo negatives to produce beautiful Prussian blue prints on both artist paper and fabric. We will lead you through the cyanotype print making process from start to finish, beginning with a discussion of the specific tools and supplies involved, as well as options for prepping your cyanotype solution, paper, and fabric. You will then experiment with exposures by using different objects and image negatives to produce your unique prints. Lastly, you will learn to rinse and dry out your prints so they are complete and ready to show!
The first half of this class will go over history, examples, how-to instruction, and demonstrations of the printing process. The last half of class will be dedicated to working with the instructor to print images, test different subjects and exposure times, troubleshoot your designs, and get creative! You will leave with at least 6-8 prints, including a tea towel, fabric pieces, and artist print paper, as well as instructions and know-how to re-create this process at home.
WANNA SEE MORE EXAMPLES? Please check out WorkshopSF’s cyanotype Pinterest board for additional cyanotype examples, process shots, and past class photos.
Supplies Needed: None. We supply all ink, paper, and supplies to print. Please wear clothing that can take a hit of ink or two. We will have aprons for you to wear. For cyanotype printing, we encourage you to bring objects from home, such as leaves or small, flat branches. You may bring a photo negative printed onto transparency paper. (A simple 8.5 X 11 sheet works, just make sure your image is printed black and white!) Please check our Pinterest board on Cyanotype for more ideas on objects to use for printing.
