PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Known to her fans as Zap Mama, Marie Daulne redefines the term "vocalist." Athletic and powerful on stage, Daulne is a “sonic stylist who alternates between storytelling and creative vocal expression.” She is the sound of urban, afro-scat, and alternative funk. Since bursting on the scene almost 20 years ago, the Belgian-Congolese diva has wowed audiences around the world with her unique sound, which seamlessly blends African, American, and European cultural influences and effortlessly mixes genres such as R&B, hip-hop, and jazz with indigenous and tribal sounds.

Antibalas is Afrobeat’s premier second-wave ensemble and disciples of Fela Kuti, the brilliant big-band leader and Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer. This eleven-member ensemble from Brooklyn deals in the rhythms that define the Afrobeat style, but bring in jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa to much acclaim. Through their concerts, tours, and recordings, Antibalas has earned the admiration of a wide array of respected musicians, including everyone from Questlove and David Byrne to members of Fugazi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. NPR Music’s Bob Boilen writes “If they come to your town, drop what you’re doing and go see them. Wear dancing shoes.”

Modlin Center Members at the Partner Level and above are invited to a pre-show reception in the Richmond CenterStage Donor Lounge beginning at 6:30pm.

Under the direction of Elena Radchenko, the 50 dancers of the Russian National Ballet Theatre return to Richmond, bringing with them the grand national tradition of Russian ballet. This classic fairy tale of the downtrodden but virtuous servant girl who captures the heart of a prince with the aid of her fairy godmother, is made larger-than life by Russia’s finest ballerinas. Along with Prokofiev's sprightly score, decadent costumes, lush scenery, and comical stepsisters, this performance is a treat for audiences of all ages.

Join the Modlin Center for Modlin Arts After Words, a post-show question-and-answer session with members of the Russian National Ballet Theatre.

Modlin Center Members at the Partner Level and above are invited to a pre-show reception in the Richmond CenterStage Donor Lounge beginning at 6:30pm.

The creator of the public radio show This American Life talks about his program and how it’s put together – what makes a compelling story, where they find the amazing stories for their show, how he and his staff are trying to push broadcast journalism beyond its traditional limits. Glass does all of this in the format of a TAL episode by mixing the stories live on stage, combining his narration with pre-taped quotes and music. In addition, Glass treats audience members to funny and memorable clips from the show, and reveals what was behind their creation.

Carpenter Theatre @ CenterStage

600 E. GRACE ST.
RICHMOND, VA
UNITED STATES
Fully renovated and restored, the historic Carpenter Theatre is the cornerstone of the Richmond CenterStage performing arts complex. It features state-of-the-art lighting and world-class acoustics while still preserving its Old World feel. Its large stage, great acoustics and 20 dressing rooms make it a performer’s dream venue. Carpenter Theatre’s main lobby includes two refreshment bars, concierge station and a gift shop, with two additional refreshment bars upstairs. Four large mosaic tile murals of parrots serve as the backdrop to the four refreshment bars and are a tribute to the handmade parrot that has been perched in the lobby since the theater first opened in 1928. Upon entering the refurbished Carpenter Theatre - with nearly 1,800 seats - audiences enjoy newly installed fiber optic stars twinkling overhead in the repainted midnight sky ceiling, one of the many preserved and enhanced elements of John Eberson's original theater design.
