About the artist
Alto saxophonist Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson studied at Harlem's famed Jazzmobile workshops with the Frank Wess, Charles Davis and Frank Foster. Anderson also met Wynton and Branford Marsalis, both playing with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Anderson then left New York to study with clarinetist Alvin Batiste at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.

Anderson toured with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, helping make some of the most defining music of the late-80s and early-90s jazz revival. Although Marsalis disbanded the group in 1995, Anderson is still the first string alto saxist with Marsalis' Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

About the artist

Tom Garling studied arranging and composition at the Berklee College of Music from 1983 to 1985. At the age of 20, he left Berklee to tour with Buddy Rich for one year, starting in January of 1986, and was on the last touring band before Rich died. Rich once said of him in an interview in Stockholm, Sweden: “Tom Garling is going to have a very, very strong future in jazz.”

In 1987, Garling enrolled at the University of Miami, where he received a degree in jazz performance and a master’s in jazz composition and arranging. He played with greats such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Randy Brecker. After graduation, Garling stayed one more year to teach improvisation classes, direct big bands and coach small groups. Shortly thereafter, he joined Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau Band, and toured for six years with Ferguson as musical director and trombonist.

Featuring the extraordinary voice and songwriting talents of six time Grammy-nominated vocalist Nnenna Freelon, The Clothesline Muse is a unique theatrical experience exploring the role of the clothesline in African-American culture.
Freelon's fierce, inspired music blends with the expressive dance of choreographer Kariamu Welsh and vibrant, visceral art of Maya Freelon Asante, bringing to life rich traditions that emerged out of the seemingly mundane act of washing and hanging clothes. Woven together through powerful words and dialogue, The Clothesline Muse is a celebration of the significant role women and domestic workers have played in African-American history and culture.
As part of UNCW's Artist in Residence Program and ARTworks educational outreach, Nnenna Freelon and Maya Freelon Asante will conduct a two-week residency at Williston Middle School. Featuring workshops, demonstrations and a special art exhibit, this project will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the opening of Williston Technical High School. More details to follow.

"Excellent Company. John Lithgow sure has a marvelous way of transforming himself into characters of every shape and size. A cast of one becomes a multitudinous ensemble." - Los Angeles Times

Following his triumphant appearances at New York’s Lincoln Center and London’s National Theatre, Tony® and Emmy® Award winning actor John Lithgow comes to Kenan Auditorium with his touching and humorous one-man show.

Invoking memories of Lithgow's grandmother and father, Stories by Heart traces the actors roots as an actor and storyteller, interspersing his own story with two great stories that were read to him as a child -- “Uncle Fred Flits By” by P. G. Wodehouse and “Haircut” by Ring Lardner.
Hailed by the New York Times as a "tour de force", Stories by Heart demonstrates the power of storytelling, the magic of theatre, and the talents of one of this generation's greatest actors.

Acclaimed as a modern dramatic masterpiece, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told through the worm’s-eye view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare’s work. In Tom Stoppard’s best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to play the lead roles.

Performances are held in the Cultural Arts Building's Mainstage Theatre. Show times on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are at 8:00 PM; Sunday matinees are at 2:00 PM . Tickets are $5 for UNCW students, $10 for UNCW staff and faculty, and $12 for general public (including tax).
