In Getting To Know Your Tools, students will begin learning about and using hand tools traditionally used by metalsmiths. This is a great intro class to learn some simple basics with affordable tools. Students will learn these basic skills by making their own pendants from a sheet of sterling silver. They will draw a simple, minimalist shape (diamond, triangle, circle, crescent, etc… NO STARS OR OTHER COMPLEX SHAPES) within a square inch of sterling silver. Then students will saw out their shape using a handsaw, file down the rough edges using jewelry files, and sand the metal until it is smooth with fine sandpaper. Students will finish off their own pendant piece by poking a hole in the metal and attaching a jump ring to their pendant so it will easily attach to a chain or leather cord.
Students will leave class with a finished pendant that they designed and constructed from base materials as well as a ‘zine titled ‘What We Learned In Class’, for future reference if they choose to continue their practice in metal smithing. They will also take a foundational understanding of metal smithing, jewelry making, and its history home with them.
LONG HAIRED STUDENTS: HAIR SHOULD BE WORN TIED BACK, SHORTER HAIR SHOULD BE TUCKED BEHIND THE EAR OR SECURED WITH BOBBY PINS.
