An American in Paris (1951)
Directed by Vincente Minnelli. Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, Oscar Levant. (113 min.)
George Gershwin’s classic songs tell the story of a GI who stays on in Paris after the war and falls in love with a piquant gamine hiding a secret. Gene Kelly’s genius is on brilliant display in this iconic Technicolor confection. Oscar’s Best Picture of 1951, it swept the other categories as well, including a special Oscar for the Kelly-choreographed dream ballet that closes the film, an inspiration for La La Land.
