Charleston's Literary and Cultural Renaissance
October 24, 2014
2:00 PM
After decades of devastation following the Civil War, the Great Earthquake of 1886, and several powerful hurricanes of the 1890s and early 1900s, Charleston experienced a cultural revival in the 1920s that would give birth to the Preservation Society of Charleston, as well as many other cultural and heritage organizations. Finally, it was a time of sustained prosperity in Charleston and a period of social, artistic and cultural dynamism that gave rise to the Jazz Age and America’s first native opera, Porgy and Bess, as well as a generation of remarkable nostalgic artwork.
