“Every time I'm about to do a Back Fence event, I tell myself right before ‘Do NOT expect this one to be as fun and inspiring as the last one. Lower your expectations so you won't be HURT.’ And then it happens again: I’m completely blown away – by the stories, the audience, pretty much the entire show.”
— LAUREN WEEDMAN, The Daily Show + HBO’s Hung.
BACK FENCE PDX has been playing to packed audiences since 2008 (at the Mission Theater since 2009!). The show pays great homage to New York’s THE MOTH, the grandaddy of live storytelling, and is also the kissing cousin to San Francisco's PORCH LIGHT Storytelling Series.
The evening features six local and national storytellers telling true 8-13 minute personal tales based on the night’s theme. Former storytellers range from a blood spatter expert, a fisherwoman, a park ranger, a pet psychic, New York Times Best-Selling authors, film and TV actors, to people we’ve met on the street. Most of the stories have never been told publicly. Or even to significant others.
No lies. No notes. No memorization.
