Ubu Rex by Alfred Jarry
Directed by Ed Wagenseller
April 3-6 and 10-13
UNCW’s Department of Theatre concludes its 2013-2014 season with the production of Ubu Rex, written by David Copelin. Ubu Rex is a close translation of Alfred Jarry’s original work, Ubu Roi, a bizarre and comedic story of the fight for power in Poland. When Pa Ubu is persuaded by his nagging wife to usurp the king of Poland, he finds himself in a battle for the Crown when the former king’s son returns seeking revenge on behalf of his father. After returning from a trip to Europe, Copelin took it upon himself to create a stage worthy translation of Ubu Roi. Copelin aims to shock modern audiences much as the original play did in 1896, where it opened and closed the same day after riots broke due to the scandalous nature of the play. Three-time award winner for Best Director by the StarNews Media group and UNCW professor, Ed Wagenseller, directs the production of Ubu Rex.
Performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are at 8:00 PM; Sunday matinees are at 2:00 PM. Tickets are $5 for UNCW students, $10 for UNCW staff and faculty, and $12 for general public.
Tickets are available at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office: 910-962-3500 or 1-800-732-3643.
